A BBC Look East news report on the decision to recruit women to the Coastguard service.

A senior officer from HM Coastguard explains a new recruiting strategy in which they plan to 'cast the net wider' by allowing women to join the service as auxiliary coastguards. The officer explains the duties of such women, who wouldn't be required to carry out 'physical rescue work' and would instead be placed in communication roles, in which they are already 'experts'. Discussing the qualities required of a female coastguard, the officer claims they will be on equal pay with the men. He also covers the generally positive views of men already serving and the capability of women in the role, citing the example of Mrs Chestney, who has served as a coastguard agent in North Norfolk for a number of years. In a separate interview, Mrs Chestney explains that it was her role as the first point of contact for her husband - Scolt Head Island warden, Bob Chestney - which led to her involvement in the coastguard.
