Background Information

The Reshaping of British Railways Report - more commonly referred to as The Beeching Report, referring to its author, Dr Richard Beeching, Chairman of British Rail - was published in March 1963. The official report and consequent proposals to cut the lesser-used rail services or to close some of the stations in lesser-populated rural areas, was informally referred to in the press as the ‘Beeching Axe’.
