Haveringland - Forest Planting

1960 , Haveringland (Norfolk)

BBC Look East news showing boys from a Norfolk school cultivating their own plot of land.

Boys on their bikes arrive at the St. Andrews School Thorpe Forestry Group. The boys set about hacking at the trees and removing the felled ones, a large clearing has been made by the boys who then hoe the ground and plant seeds in newly dug holes. A smaller boy struggles with the digging and so a gentleman helps him with the task and the planting. As the boys carry on with their plight, reporter Brian Fawcett interviews of the one instigators of the scheme and a master of the school. The former discusses why they have developed a forestry group and why it is important for the youth to play a part in the development of local forests. The school master explains what they'll do with the plot of the land which he hopes will include map reading exercises and a nature study centre.
