BBC Look East report on planned expansions at the Sizewell Nuclear Power Station.
In the aftermath of the Three Mile Island nuclear accident in the United States, concerns have been raised over proposals to build the same type of reactor in the planned expansion of Sizewell Nuclear Power Station in Suffolk. An official speaks on behalf of the power station, defending the safety record of nuclear power and refuting suggestions that the government opted for a Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) as the cheap solution, considering it a well-proven system. He assures local residents about the safety of the PWR system, citing important design differences from the failed reactor at Three Mile Island. An anti-nuclear campaigner, however, raises grave safety concerns, which he suggests are supported by numerous studies, and claims that he and his colleagues plan to fight the proposals every inch of the way, up to and including the public inquiry.

Background Information
After abandoning proposals for advanced gas-cooled and steam-generating heavy-water reactors in the 1970s, the decision to build a pressurised water reactor (PWR) was announced in 1980. Following detailed safety reviews by the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate and a lengthy public inquiry, construction of the reactor known as 'Sizewell B' began in 1987 and was fully commissioned and synchronised with the national grid in 1995.
