[Stable Boys Strike]

1970 , Newmarket (Suffolk)

BBC Look East report on strikes threatening the start of the flat-racing season at Newmarket.

A strike of stable-hands at Newmarket threatens to disrupt the start of the flat racing season. A representative of the stable-hands is interviewed by a BBC East correspondent, discussing their experiences with trainers, with the younger ones generally supportive of a pay increase, whilst the older trainers are stuck in the past. Claiming that he has tried to open negotiations with both trainers and the Transport & General Workers Union, he has not yet seen an agreement supposedly negotiated by the trainers and the union. Inside the Newmarket stables, a trainer suggests the situtation isn't causing too many problems for the majority of trainers, but could become serious if the strike spreads. The trainer also claims that, since an agreement with the union was only reached on Thursday, it would be unlikely that the stable-hands would have seen it yet. He considers the terms of the agreement to be quite favourable and would be very surprised if it was not accepted.
