Too Few Boys in Clacton, Too Many Girls in Harwich

Anglia Television segment investigating the youth population in coastal Essex.

On the Essex coast, Bob Wellings investigates the population disparity between young men and women. On the steps of Clacton Town Hall, he speaks to a group of young women, who claim the boys there don't know how to treat a girl and raise concerns about a general shortage of boys. One young man claims many of his friends have girlfriends from outside Clacton, whilst a council representative claims they are trying to address the lack of young men by attracting light industry to the town. A little further up the coast, chairman of the Harwich & Dovercourt Youth Committee, Chris Barker, speaks about a shortage of girls at youth centres and dances in the area. A group of young locals are asked about this shortage, with a young seaman suggesting he finds it easier to get girls in the Antipodes, and another claiming that things improve with the summer influx.
