Sociology Introduced As Subject At Cambridge University

In an interview for local television news, an American professor of sociology gives his view on why the subject should be studied at elite universities in England.

Professor Lipset, from Berkeley, University of California is interviewed in the grounds of a Cambridge college. As a Professor of Sociology, he is visiting the University of Cambridge at the beginning of the term when the subject is to be studied for the first time. The Professor observes that a disproportionate number of the ablest undergraduates attend the elite universities of Oxford and Cambridge. As a result, sociology has been limited to the provincial universities and London; hence the subject has not had its fair share of the best talent. He hopes that improved quality of research in the subject will throw more light on various aspects of English life, and that studies would influence the thinking in politics, in the workplace and in other academic disciplines. Finally, he feels that sociology will put the University more in touch with the life that surrounds it.
