BBC Look East report on defiant Catholic services in Downham Market.

Tony Scase reports from Downham Market, which has become a focal point for those opposed to changes instituted in the Catholic Church by the Second Vatican Council. At St Dominic's Church, leading opponent of the changes, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, delivers a Tridentine Mass, despite it having been formally replaced by the Mass of Paul VI in 1969. Scase interviews the local Parish Priest, Father Oswald Baker, who dismisses his 'rebel' status, referring to the 'deterioration of structure' in the church and calling his stand 'Catholic and correct'. Baker also talks about the support of his parishioners, the honour of hosting Lefebvre and his belief that 'if the true mass were restored tomorrow, Catholics would flock back to it with gratitude'. Also interviewed is Archbishop Lefebvre, who speaks in favour of authority, order and obedience, but believes that when authority is 'against the truth, against morality, against the good of the church, we have no right to obey'. The report concludes with Lefebvre leading the Tridentine Mass for a packed congregation, with some worshippers forced to stand.
