'K' Shoe Factory Workers' Protest
1976 , Norwich (Norfolk)
Cat no. 215405
BBC Look East news report from the 'K Shoes' factory following the news of possible redundancies.
Workers from the 'K' shoes factory are staging a 'work-in' in protest against the closure of the factory, due to happen on December 31st. All management have been locked out. Mr Beckets, shop steward, argues that due to high national unemployment, factory employees are unlikely to find alternative work and redundancy payments cannot last forever, therefore all staff want to remain in their current jobs. BBC Journalist Malcolm Alsop speaks with Production Director, David Hawes, who describes the existing situation and communication between management and trade union representatives. Roger Spiller, a trade union representative, is interviewed inside the factory, describing what his members hope to achieve, and rebuffing any claims made by management that not all union members are fully supportive of the protest. Malcolm Alsop closes the report with a piece to camera questioning how effective the 'work-in' actually is.
