BBC Look East report on a chalk mine uncovered during building works.

Vision and interviews from a BBC Look East news item featuring a chalk and flint mine which had been uncovered by building works. A low-angle shot shows the BBC correspondent and two others collecting a lantern from a man standing at the entrance to the mine. The trio are shown walking down a set of stairs and into the caverns, along a tunnel with various signs painted on the wall. Inside the mine, one of the men examines rocks, and the group explore deeper into the tunnel system, much of which has been reinforced with brick. A wall is shown covered in graffiti, with some dating back to the 19th century. Above ground, the group discuss the mine. The man, a geologist, discusses the state of the workings and the woman discusses why they are here. She suggests they were likely to have been started in the 13th century, with chalk and flint extracted as building materials. The possible uses of the mine in the 19th century are also discussed, with records suggesting that it might have been used for banquets and special celebrations. The report concludes with more shots inside the tunnel system, and a brief interview with the building site foreman, who assures the BBC correspondent that there will be little risk of serious subsidence because the new structures will be built using reinforced concrete rafts.
