Post-war documentary portrait depicting a day in the life of the Devonshire fishing harbour of Brixham, where the tools of the fishing trade lie in wait until the harbour awakes.

Small craft and trawlers set out in search of a catch, some for weeks at a day, others for just a day. Fishing is everyone's business in Brixham, from those who stay on dry land to prepare ice for cooling fish on long journeys, to others who spend leisurely days on the harbour waiting for the ships to return or busily working to maintain old boats and build new ones. The Harbour Master watches as the ships return with their catches, which are gutted and sorted before unloading. Once ashore, the fish are taken to market and loaded for distribution all over south-west England. All that's left now is for the men to clean and prepare for the next trip, leaving their boats empty and clean, still and quiet, the harbour finally asleep at the end of a long day.
