BBC East report on the deployment of the 1st East Anglian Regiment to Aden.
BBC East report on preparations for the deployment of the 1st East Anglian Regiment (Royal Norfolk and Suffolk) to the Middle East during the Aden Emergency. With preparations for deployment well underway, a group of soldiers continue to load equipment and supplies onto Army trucks. Outside the barracks building, Reporter Martin Bell interviews the leader of the regiment, Lieutenant-Colonel Dye. Eager at the prospect of overseas service, Dye suggests that 'at this time of year, one's jolly glad to leave England and get into the sunshine'. Whilst the regiment will primarily be responsible for internal security in Aden and thus not 'technically' on active service, Dye expects that their duties will get a little 'warm' on occasion. The special training undertaken by the regiment is also discussed, as well as the condition of barracks in Aden and recent recruiting problems for the regiment and across the armed services. Bell asks how the men feel about the deployment, and Dye concludes by suggesting that many are looking forward to it enormously, himself included.
