Anglia Television correspondent Colin Bower interviews Len Ramuz, founder of the Broads Society, about his objections to the proposed re-opening of the canal linking North Walsham and Dilham. Ramuz considers it a very good idea if possible, but raises concerns that the cost of re-opening would not warrant its occasional use. Discussing the neglected state of the canal and its locks, Ramuz suggests it would cost a small fortune to re-open, claiming a negligible commercial viability, particularly given the lack of cargo traffic and its occasional use by holidaymakers. Ramuz also raises grave doubts about maintaining the water levels required to operate locks, suggesting it might be better to cover the canal and reclaim the land for farming.
