Norwich City FC: 1958/59 FA Cup Run

1959 , Norwich (Norfolk)

A collection of Pathe newsreels depicting the latter stages of Norwich City's FA Cup run in 1958/59.

Featuring excerpts from a series of Pathe newsreels, a collection of films depict Norwich City Football Club's astonishing rise from Division Three and the their impressive FA cup run during the 1958/59 season. Having previously vanquished Ilford, Swindon Town, Manchester United and Cardiff City, the Canaries travelled to White Hart Lane to meet Tottenham Hotspur in the 5th round. A second-half goal from Terry Allcock put Norwich ahead, but Spurs fought back with a last-minute equaliser from Cliff Jones. Four days later, in a replay under lights at Carrow Road, Norwich settled the tie with Terry Bly's half-volley. Drawing Sheffield United in the 6th round, the Canaries travelled to Bramall Lane, falling behind early at the hands of a Billy Russell lob. Pulling out all the stops in the second half - including goalkeeper Ken Nethercott playing the final 30 minutes with a dislocated shoulder - Norwich levelled the game and forced the replay when Errol Crossan buried the ball in an empty net. Returning to Carrow Road for the replay, Bobby Brennan fired Norwich ahead after 13 minutes and Terry Bly put the Canaries two goals up, before Derek Pace pulled one back for Sheffield United just before half time. After the interval, Terry Bly scored his second and Norwich's third, and despite Gerry Summers heading home another for the Blades, Sheffield ran out of time, leaving Norwich destined for an FA Cup semi-final. The hard-fought semi against Luton Town saw the Canaries return to White Hart Lane, where Alan Brown's header put the Hatters one up, before a second half effort from Norwich's Bobby Brennan forced the replay. The following Wednesday afternoon the clubs re-convened at St Andrews' stadium in Birmingham, where a tense first half ended goalless. The second term continued in much the same vein until the aftermath of a free-kick allowed Billy Bingham to slot home the only goal of the game. Luton were headed for the FA Cup final, and Norwich City's FA cup run was at an end.

Background Information

The following season, Third Division Norwich finished second in the league to Southampton and were promoted to the Second Division where they stayed for twelve seasons, finishing fourth in 1960/61. The Sheffield United game in which he dislocated his shoulder would prove to be the final game in a Canaries shirt for legendary Norwich City goalkeeper Ken Nethercott.
