An ‘About Anglia’ special for Anglia Television, introduced by Dick Joice, documenting the 1963 London to Brighton Veteran Car Rally. Footage of veteran cars at the initial meeting point, Hyde Park, and interviews with enthusiast spectators and eccentric rally competitors - including East Anglian contenders, Mr Rockcliffe and Mr Johnson from Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. They detail the technical specifications, performance success, make, and age of entrant vehicles, all late nineteenth century models. An interview follows with the Chief Marshall and Mr Mallard, a representative of the Royal Automobile Club, the event organisers. The unusual cars navigate the central London roads, passing iconic landmarks – Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben – and spectators lining the streets. The cars journey the main roads to Brighton, with a brief stop to refuel – both for vehicle and passengers – before completing the final stretch and arriving at the Brighton seafront, greeted by the Mayor and crowds of well-wishers. Dick Joice interviews his accompanying driver and car owner, Mr Roy Clarkson. The film is intercut by comic scenes of Anglia Television presenter, Bob Wellings’ alternative lone journey, navigating Norfolk’s narrow country lanes, and arriving at an unknown deserted coastal destination.
