Home movie of a garden party in a Norfolk country house. The Salter and Bird families watch a tennis match followed by a game of bowls.
A shot of trees before cutting to a shot of a woman outside hitting a ball with a tennis racket. On the other side of the court a man then hits the ball with his racket. A group of people in the background are sitting on a blanket watching the match as a woman swings her racket. The camera pans over to the young children clapping as they watch the game. A group of adults arrange deckchairs on the grass and sit down to watch. A man then carries a tray with drinks on and hands them out to the group. Close up of a man drinking. Men play a game of bowls and roll a ball one by one across the grass. Close ups of the bowls game. A man shakes hands with one of the women sitting on the deckchairs watching the game. More close-ups of men playing bowls. A woman carrying flowers and wearing a long dress and hat walks across the garden towards the camera. The camera pans along her outfit and zooms in on the flowers she is holding. Another woman holds a box whilst smiling at the camera. Another woman wearing an apron stands in front of the house looking at the camera, followed by a shot of a man holding a broom walking towards her. He then sweeps the floor. The woman in the apron walks down the steps away from him while laughing. A shot of a church before panning down to the gravestones in front of it.

Background Information
Mrs Bird is a life-long resident of Norwich who brought a collection of family films to the East Anglian Film Archive in the early 1990s. The films in the collection were shot by her father, Guy Salter, her mother and later by Mrs Bird herself. Her father bought the camera, a Cine Kodak, in Rochester New York, whilst on a business trip for Colmans in the early 1930s. Guy Salter had entered the firm of Colman’s as an accountant and was to leave it as the Chairman many years later.
