Clyde

1931 , Barnet (Greater London)

A talking dog creates a stir in a high society household.

Amateur filmmaker, cinema historian and railway engineer H.A.V. Bulleid employs dry wit and sharp satire in this loose adaptation of the 'Saki' (aka Hector Hugo Munro) short story, 'Tobermory'. When Lord Bink - 'an extremely clever scientist' - creates a concoction which gives Clyde the Dog the gift of human speech, he gets a little more than he bargained for, as the dry wit and scathing tongue of Clyde wreaks havoc in the genteel world of Mrs Gatty's garden.

Background Information

The credit 'Apologies to H.H. Munro. Saki.' implies that the film was loosely based on the 'Saki' (aka Hector Hugo Munro) short story, 'Tobermory' - first published in the short story collection 'The Chronicles of Clovis' - in which a professor at a large, upper-class country gathering demonstrates his theories by teaching a cat to talk, much to the outrage of those in attendance.
