H.A.V. Bulleid takes a novel approach to the home movie.
Amateur filmmaker, cinema historian and railway engineer H.A.V. Bulleid takes a novel approach to making a home movie, depicting himself and his wife, Ann McCann, as the 'jokers in the pack' of the McCann and Bulleid families, whom they visit in locations across England. Ann boards a train heading north and promptly falls asleep, as the film traces time spent with family at Didsbury on the outskirts of Manchester, where the family frolics in the backyard whilst Bulleid's screen alter ego, Elmer Quane, edits a film and Ann walks the dogs. Shifting the action south, Ann wanders the streets of wartime London, shopping, taking tea, visiting the (mostly empty) National Gallery and seeing a West End play. Further south, at the Bulleid home of Boxhurst, near Dorking in Surrey, the family climb to the peak of Box Hill, collect produce on the Estate and relax in the garden, playing with pets. Before long, however, they must return north to Didsbury, and to the incessant rain.
