Sea Rangers

1930 , Portsmouth (Hampshire)

Amateur documentary made by filmmaker Joyce Allingham depicting girl Sea Rangers on the training ship HMS Foudroyant in Portsmouth.

Teenage filmmaker and Sea Ranger Joyce Allingham documents her experience aboard the training ship HMS Foudroyant, based in Portsmouth. The film opens with a series of shots of Sea Rangers on small sailing boats. This cuts to a group of Sea Rangers exiting Portsmouth Harbour Station with their duffel bags before heading to the Foudroyant on a motorboat. After dining in the mess hall, the title ‘CLEAN SHIP’ is followed by shots of the girls scrubbing tables and the deck. Following the intertitle ‘NOW TO WORK’, the girls practice semaphore, knot tying, and are taught how to throw mooring ropes. On the deck, they are instructed on the use of the Bosun’s Call and perform drills. Brief shots of the Rangers on sailing boats is followed by mealtime in the mess hall. The sequence ‘DOG WATCHES’ shows the Rangers mending ropes, washing clothes, and other daily chores. On the sailing boats again, the Rangers practice traversing the waters in and around Portsmouth Harbour. They also rehearse evacuation drills from the ship into lifeboats before a final inspection on the ship’s deck.
