Silver Jubilee Celebrations of HM King George V and Queen Mary 1910-1935

1935 , Luton (Bedfordshire)

A carnival style parade through Luton town centre to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the reign of King George V.

Amateur footage of the Silver Jubilee parade. A band followed by dignitaries leads the procession through Luton town centre as crowds gather to line the streets. There are many decorated floats, the first proclaiming 'Long Live Their Majesties'. Others follow, most sponsored by local businesses. The camera operates intermittently to capture shots, presumably to economise on film. The Palace Theatre's vehicle advertises ‘His Majesty’s Broadcast Tonight at 8pm’ (together with a performance of ‘Things Are Looking Up’ starring Cicely Courtneidge). Girl Guides, Boy Scouts and Nurses parade in their distinctive uniforms. The camera is stationed at various locations along the route of the parade; there are some adventurous, overhead camera angles showing excellent detail of the floats and cars. Huge crowds fill the road at the end of the procession; some individuals notice the camera above them and wave.
