Sir Winston Churchill at Churchill College

1959 , Cambridge (Cambridgeshire)

Sir Winston Churchill inaugurates Churchill College by planting two trees.

A newspaper article reads "Churchill College - Sir Winston Churchill Plants Two Trees- Outstanding Gifts Announced." On 17 October 1959, crowds have gathered to catch a glimpse of Churchill himself. He exits from a black car with a walking cane. He waves as he approaches some seats and gives his signature Victory sign. Two women sit beside him. He stands up to take a shovel and shovels soil into a newly planted tree. He stands and gives a speech to which he gets applause from the crowd.

Background Information

A new Cambridge college, the first to be named after a living person, was announced in 1958. In 1959 a site was chosen in north-west Cambridge, one mile from the city centre. On 17 October 1959 Sir Winston paid his sole visit and planted two trees, but he never saw the built College. Churchill College opened to students in 1960.
