Scenes of Southend-on-Sea and Leigh-on-Sea in the 1930s.

A collection of scenes featuring the grand hotels and summertime crowds of two seaside resorts in 1930s Essex. In busy Southend-on-Sea, visitors walk up and down Pier Hill in front of the Royal Hotel, whilst a grand statue of Queen Victoria (now located in Clifftown Parade) keeps watch in front of the Grand Pier Hotel. A little further down the hill, the imposing Palace Hotel towers over the crowds walking down to Marine Parade and Southend-on-Sea beach, with excellent views of the grand iron pier. At nearby Leigh-on-Sea, bathers frolic in the shallow tidal pools in front of a crowded beach where a young man weaves between the beach chairs selling newspapers and magazines. Elsewhere, a special outdoor saltwater pool plays host to dedicated swimmers, floating platforms and a pair of diving boards.
