Juniors Can Sail
1977 , Norfolk (County)
Cat no. 7921
A film sponsored by Norfolk County Council’s Education Department, featuring the instruction and activities at an after-school sailing club.
A group of adult sailing enthusiasts gather at the water’s edge, prepare their boats for sail, and then go out onto the water, to take part in a sailing race. A schoolboy visits his headmaster, making the request to join the school sailing club. With written permission from his parents, and reassurance of the pupil’s commitment, his headmaster approves the request. At the after-school sailing club, the boys receive a series of theoretical instructions on dry land, before taking to the water in their sailing boats, developing their knowledge and practical skills in stages. Off-camera commentary throughout explains the practicalities of sailing, and emphasises the sport as a worthy hobby for young people, gaining confidence and building life skills, in addition to providing the exhilaration and exercise that people of all ages enjoy.
