A village takes part in a national wartime fundraising effort.

The Bedfordshire village of Aspley Guise participates in 'Salute the Soldier' week, a national fundraising scheme to encourage civilians to place their money in government bank accounts, bonds and savings schemes as Britain prepares for a final assault on Nazi Germany. Celebrations begin with a mass parade involving local marching bands, nurses, police officers, firemen, members of the Home Guard, cadet and reserve soldiers and various boys and girls groups including Scouts and Girl Guides. The parade culminates on the village green with speeches, blessing ceremonies, sporting events and games. Later in the week, Invasion Day celebrations take place at The Manor, celebrating the Normandy landing on D-Day (June 6), with children arriving in fancy dress costume and watching a Punch & Judy show. Despite setting a fundraising target of £8000, the Aspley Guise community exceeds itself raising a total of £11,325.
