A Bedfordshire County Council Film featuring the craftsmen and women at work at the Cambridgeshire firm, Douglas Cockerell & Son, in particular focusing on the art of designing marble paper.

A film produced for the 1970 Society of Archivists' Conference, and featuring the craft of making marble paper, by the Cambridgeshire firm, Douglas Cockerell & Son. Footage of Sydney Cockerell’s Grantchester home and marble paper business. Commentary introduces Sydney Cockerell, and long-standing employee, William Chapman, also detailing how, and why, the business was founded. Mr William Chapman, an employee for forty years, demonstrates how each individual marble design is produced, using specific equipment, paint, and marbling tools. Commentary accompanies the visual demonstration inside the workshop, and describes the process step-by-step. Commentary also explains the science behind the marbling treatment, contemporary uses of the marble papers, and history of the art of marbling. Finally, footage of the other craftsmen and women, with commentary, demonstrating the firm’s other activities of paper conservation and bookbinding. Please note that this film ends abruptly.
