The working life of a Hertfordshire village.

A documentary, made by local resident Margaret Wright, showing daily life in Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire. Mr Westwood, the village blacksmith, is showing operating a billows, whilst another man paints gates and doors. Beside the River Lea, the Miller checks on the operation of his mill, whilst a young lady saddles up a horse and rides through the surrounding countryside. The Collins antique store and its delivery truck are featured, as more residents are shown passing through the village by bicycle or on foot. At the village school, Miss Betty Warren, the school mistress, supervises the children as they walk in two neat lines, the girls always entering gates and doorways before the boys. Elsewhere, another woman tends to chickens whilst her cat plays with a freshly-laid egg. Mr Lee is shown arriving for his shift as Station Master at the village railway station, where a train is shown arriving and departing. Meanwhile, inside St Helen's Church, the organist and bell ringers are practising their craft. C.V. Wren, the local coachbuilder and wheelwright, is shown busily constructing a coach with particular attention paid to the assembly of wooden wheels fitted with iron tyre bands. A woman arrives to work in a shop and is shown refueling a car, whilst another serves a customer in a grocery store. The film concludes where the village meets the surrounding farms, as a woman tends to cows, herding them into shelters and feeding the calves, before visiting a shepherd and his son who appear with a large flock of ewes and lambs.
