Woolverstone

1956 , Woolverstone (Suffolk)

Filmmakers Joan and Ted Hammond's family caravanning holiday to Woolverstone in 1956.

With their caravan in tow the Hammond family drive on their journey from their garage business in Frinton-on-Sea to their destination at the Royal Harwich Yacht Club campsite, Woolverstone. Whilst Joan prepares the caravan home, the children bring in churns of water. Ted gets to work chopping at the long grass on their pitch with a hand scythe. The family explore the banks of the River Orwell. The (since decommissioned) Cliff Quay Power Station can be seen in the distance. Relaxed, the family sit for a picnic lunch in front of the caravan, and the children play cricket. The rest of the film shows the holidaymakers have a succession of fun excursions to the river: sailing their boats, swimming and plunging into the water from the jetty platform.
