Amateur travelogue documenting a schoolboys' cruise to Norway.

A schoolboys' cruise to Norway aboard the M.S. Dunera. The film begins with the ship still in port, as schoolboys, their chaperones and teachers mill around the deck. Skipping across the North Sea, the ship reaches Kristiansund where the boys disembark and visit a swimming beach before traveling via the Romsdalfjord to the village of Åndalsnes. A brief journey on the scenic Rauma Railway to Bjorli is followed by a visit to the waterfalls and sheer cliffs of Geiranger. Back on Dunera, the party travels south to Bergen, where a rainbow frames the historic port district of Bryggen and the fish markets nearby. A short trip up the Fløibanen Funicular railway to the top of Fløyen mountain provides stunning views of Bergen and the surrounding area. The trip continues with a visit to Norheimsund on the Hardangerfjord and the nearby Steinsdalsfossen waterfall, and concludes in the historic port city of Stavanger with its street markets and picturesque Lake Breiavatnet. The party returns over the North Sea to Tilbury and the familiar sight of a Thames sailing barge.

Background Information

The featured ship - M.S. Dunera - was initially built as a troop transportation ship in the lead-up to World War II; it gained notoriety after the fall of France when it was used to transport over two thousand 'enemy aliens' (including a large number of Jewish refugees) to internment camps in Australia in 1940.
