Village Celebrations

1920s , Luton Hoo (Bedfordshire)

Amateur film of an historical pageant performed by villagers.

Villagers perform an historical pageant in the picturesque setting of a landscaped garden by a lake. The actors are dressed as Druids, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Crusaders, and Elizabethan courtiers. Native American costumes possibly allude to the discovery of the 'New World', but the narrative of the pageant is not obvious. In part of the performance, characters in the pageant disembark from a boat on the lake. At the close of the film, there is a shot of the spectators, in fashionable dress, watching from tiered seating.

Background Information

The location could very well be the estate of Luton Hoo. Capabiltiy Brown was responsible for most of the landscape design here in the eighteenth century, and formed two lakes by damning the River Lea. It would be typical for the local mansion to stage such an event.
