An instructional film on landscape architecture for local authorities and town planners.

Aimed at local authorities, architects and town planners, this documentary explores the design of space and the implementation of landscape architecture across Britain. Opening with a brief history of settlement and town planning, it introduces new concepts of planning which aim to provide a 'contact with nature which is needed more than ever in this machine age'. Modern examples of town planning are provided, with visits to Cumbernauld (a new town under construction outside Glasgow), Crawley (a new town developed around an existing community in Sussex), and Stevenage (a new town where individual neighbourhoods are linked by roads, cycleways and pedestrian walks). Meanwhile, in Birmingham, Coventry, Plymouth and Ipswich, new approaches to space are changing the face of Britain's cities. Specific guidance on landscape architecture encompasses the layout of housing, the integration of trees and gardens, the importance of parks and sports fields, the functionality of town squares and shopping areas, and the integrated approach to landscaping, signage and street furniture.
