Four 99 on Show

c. 1958 , Peterborough (Cambridgeshire)

F. Perkins Ltd. launches their new 'baby diesel' engine, the Four 99.

The country's leading motoring correspondents - more than eighty journalists from the national and trade press - arrive in Peterborough by special express train from London, and are transferred by diesel coaches to a nearby test track where F. Perkins Ltd. are embarking on a week of public demonstrations of their new 'baby diesel' engine, the 'Four 99'. At the largest demonstration ever staged by Perkins for the launch of a new engine, the press-men are witness to a 'culmination of a new idea', the introduction of a diesel engine small and capable enough to suit cars and light vans. A range of local and imported vehicles have been converted to Four 99 engines and are tested by journalists, with a range of testimonials given via voiceover. Also shown are previews of sales aids, displays of the three Four 99 engine types - agricultural, industrial and vehicle and car - as well as literature and film shows. The film concludes with a collection of news cuttings, testimony to the successful launch of the 'ideal power unit for a limitless number of applications: the Perkins Four 99'.
