Excerpts from a BBC profile of actor and singer Elton Hayes.
Two excerpts from a BBC profile of actor, singer and entertainer Elton Hayes. In the first excerpt, Hayes walks through his yard and out to his horse whilst 'My Heart is Like a Nightingale' plays. Back in his sitting room, he talks about his work on television: from children's programmes and plays to his work on 'fillers', short items used to fill schedule time at Christmas or during rain breaks in test matches. The second, much longer excerpt, features Hayes discussing his music and career, including his musical versions of the poems of Kipling and his adaptations of Edward Lear. He describes his unique style on the guitar, which he views as a kind of portable piano, and notes that - despite having a musical education - he never had a single lesson on the guitar. Hayes also talks about his involvement with Disney; writing background music for Treasure Island (1950), and later starring as Alan-a-Dale in The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men (1952), where he arranged and performed the popular tune 'Whistle My Love', which he plays on a portable stereo. Discussing the premature end of his career, Hayes notes that he'd simply 'had enough' and struggled with his increasingly nervous disposition, preferring a healthy life in the Suffolk countryside. The segment concludes with Hayes' giving a lovely rendition of 'Wand'rin' Star' from Paint Your Wagon, with the BBC presenter accompanying on guitar.
