Documentary profile of artist, and north-Norfolk resident, Philip Gardner.

Profile of watercolour artist, and Norfolk resident, Philip Gardner, introduced and narrated by arts journalist, Sheridan Morley. Footage of Gardner in attendance at The Ringstead art gallery, near Hunston, featuring an exhibition of his own work. Gardner explains the detail of his favourite painting, “Cromer from West Brunton”, with a close up of this, and his other exhibited paintings. An admirer purchases a painting. Sheridan Morley narrates, explaining the artist’s early career in advertising before becoming a full time professional artist. Morley details Gardner’s famous collectors of his work, including Her Majesty The Queen, and reveals the worldwide locations that his work has been exhibited. Gardner walks along a coastal path at Blakeney, Norfolk, then makes his way to Blakeney Point, the landscape here providing inspiration for much of his work. At the beach, he makes a rough sketch of the landscape, adding notes to the drawing, and then, in his studio, Gardner completes the watercolour; with Morley commentating on the artist’s style and technique. Gardner walks in the garden of his Wiveton home, where he initially ran his advertising business, and then takes tea with his wife and daughter in the family home, ending on a close up of one of his paintings. The remaining footage features a montage of Philip Gardner’s many Norfolk-inspired watercolour paintings; first, a sequence of land and seascapes, second, a sequence of character paintings, and third, a sequence of sports-themed watercolours; accompanied by music.
