Documentary profile of author, and Suffolk resident, Laurens van der Post,

Profile of African-born author and now Suffolk resident, Laurens van der Post, introduced and narrated by arts journalist, Sheridan Morley. Footage of Sir Laurens greeting his fans and signing copies of his latest work at an Aldeburgh bookshop; leaving his Aldeburgh home; arriving at a Suffolk beach, the location of his workplace, a fisherman’s lookout tower; and finally, shots of the author working inside. Commentary details the author’s life and work; his high-profile acquaintances and knighthood, literary achievements, reputation as a people’s philosopher, and inadvertently promotes his latest non-fiction work, ‘Yet Being Somewhere Other’, an autobiographical account of episodes in his life, and partly inspired by the Suffolk coast. Followed by an overhead shot of Laurens van der Post walking along a pebbled Suffolk beach.

Background Information

Laurens van der Post died in London on December 17, 1996, at aged 90. Introduced by Sheridan Morley as “Laurens van der Post; writer, farmer, explorer, disciple of Jung, friend to Prince Charles, Godfather to Prince William, and perhaps one of the true renaissance men”, however, following his death, rather scathing accounts of the man surfaced. The following article published by The Independent argues much of Laurens van der Post’s claims about his own life had been fabricated, and paints a much less enchanting profile of the author, in comparison to the documentary. http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/books/reviews/storyteller-the-many-lives-of-laurens-van-der-post-by-jdf-jones-748400.html
