Outtakes from a BBC East programme looking at the lives of children evacuated during WWII.

A group of evacuees pose for a photograph outside a school, in the first excerpt from a series of reminiscences recorded for a BBC East series focusing on the experiences of children evacuated during the Nazi air raids of World War II. In groups and individually, many of the evacuees share their stories about life in English villages, at large country houses or on farms in countryside. Many share positive memories of their life during war-time, days spent 'running wild', playing on farms or watching planes take off. Others, however, share tales of less accommodating hosts. One woman speaks of going with her friend to live with a little old lady in a tiny cottage with no electricity or running water, an outside toilet and a sparse diet, whilst a man tells of his horrific experiences with a family who forced him to do housework, forbid him from playing with toys indoors and treated him so badly he was taken home by his parents with malnutrition.
