Venture On The Wind

1970 , Pin Mill (Suffolk)

An impressionistic study of an outing of cine enthusiasts on a Thames sailing barge on the River Orwell.

Overlooking a harbour at low tide, sailing and rowing boats are moored and very little people activity takes place. A montage of images - calm waters revealing the surface reflection of a sailing barge; boat equipment; the natural marine environment – pools of water and marine life on the wet sands, and vegetation on the rocks; sturdy metal chains and anchors used for mooring – all accompanied by the natural sounds of coastal birdlife. Visitors make their way out to their boat, negotiating the muddy sand, including one man wearing a wetsuit and diving equipment. On this sunny day on the water, a group of cine enthusiasts from Clacton, spend the day on a sailing barge, named ‘Venture’. Members of the group work together to hoist the sails, and steer the vessel. The different working parts of the boat are shown, its ropes, and heavy equipment, followed by a shot of the sailing barge with all its sails up and working as its journeys along the River Orwell, accompanied by the natural sounds of the wind howling and waves rippling. The sailing barge returns to the harbour.
