The Long Way Home (michikusa)

1981 , Malibu, California, USA (Other)

A lonely girl makes new friends.

A lonely girl (Marie), whose father is dead and whose mother is often absent from home, does not make friends easily. Marie is asked by a fellow student (Lisa) to go to a party but is reluctant to accept the invitation. Reluctant even to accept an offer of going to this girl’s home the following evening to do maths homework and play with her, Marie heads home alone. On the way, she plays in a field by herself but is caught in a rain storm. She shelters in the porch of a dilapidated house. Its occupant, Mrs Albee, an old lady who lives alone with only the dolls she has recovered from the dump for company, invites Marie in to shelter from the storm. The two talk but Marie only reluctantly responds to Mrs Albee’s questions and refuses to commit herself when Mrs Albee asks her if she will visit her again. The old woman leaves the room to make some tea and Marie steals the doll she has taken a fancy to, and which also used to be Mrs Albee’s daughter’s favourite. Marie returns to an empty home. Her mother is absent again and communicates with her daughter via notes, which are left around the house. Marie plays with the doll and marries it one of her own. The next morning Marie returns the doll to Mrs Albee and asks her to look after her own with it. While waiting for the school bus, Lisa asks Marie again if she will visit her new house. Marie accepts the offer.
