Film about the cultivation and distribution of hops in England. After briefly setting out the history of hop production in the United Kingdom from the introduction of hops in the 16th century, the film details practices in commercial hop production. Sequences include: growing hops from cuttings (including new varieties) in greenhouses; layering established plants in fields to create new roots; maintenance work performed in hop gardens over the winter months; work undertaken in cultivating the vines up to the picking season; the picking of hops; the drying process; the distribution process and the role of the Hop Marketing Board; the use of hops in the brewing industry. Shots of the layering process include: removing the vine, burying the vine in a trench and the replanting roots one year later. Shots of winter work in the hop garden include: the felling of sweet chestnut trees for hop poles and repairs to the wires that carry the vines. Shots of hop-picking include: workers picking hops by hand and the method of recording piece work; mechanised hop picking. Shots of hop drying include: the workings of kilns, pressing the dried hops into pockets. Shots of the Hop Marketing Board include the creation of samples for distribution to brewers and hop factors; the quality assessment process. Shots in a brewery include brewery staff adding blended hops in the brewing process.
