The stages of cultivation in Japanese rice fields.

Documentary. Dedicated to 'The Japanese farmer and his family whose remitting labour feeds and supports an Empire'. Shots of making dykes to retain water in the rice field, preparing the seed beds, thinning, fertilising, mulching, ploughing and levelling. Footage of picking tea leaves from hedges and cutting mulberry leaves to feed the silkworms, and the worms being put into straw to make their cocoons. There are shots of women working in the fields whilst looking after or nursing their children. Shots of the children playing - skipping, a swordfight and bathing.
