Make Your Own Movies

1959

A film to encourage amateur film-making and to draw attention to the two magazines devoted to the subject.

A documentary film illustrating the pleasures and skills involved in amateur film-making. The commentator urges families to take a cine camera on holiday to record their memories - an extract from Peter Bowen's film 'Low Tide' (1954) of a family on holiday at the seaside is shown. One shot shows a man reading 'Amateur Cine World' in a deckchair. Other uses are illustrated - filming babies and sports. The audience is told the cost of film processing is included in the film. Shots of a film being set up for projection and a family gathered to watch the film. Titling is explained (the film title used as illustration reads 'The Pinner Cine Society'. Editing as an aid to narrative technique is shown with extracts from a film 'Water Lark'. The film states that although many film-makers work alone, many more are forming clubs and societies. There are shots of the studio of Ace Movies making 'Sakura' (1956), directed by Maurice Fowler, and extracts from the film. The commentary acknowledges that choosing the right equipment from the many cameras available can be confusing - shots of cameras in shop windows with price tags and sale reductions. The audience is told there are three main gauges - 8mm, 9.5mm (where a camera and projector can be bought for £20) and 16mm for the more ambitious wanting to reach a wider audience. The film concludes by promoting the magazines 'Amateur Cine World' and 'Amateur Movie Maker'.
