Documentary. Film record of animistic rituals in Togo. Identifying animism as the most prevalent form of religious belief in Togo, the film provides information about animistic ceremonies which enable the living to communicate with the souls of ancestors, the voodoos. Sequences include shots of: ritual dancing; oracles; fishermen; an African woman drawing water from a well; an African man cutting vegetation with a machete; African women preparing and cooking food; a market; a corpse in an open coffin; a funeral ceremony with women in mourning and dance rituals; a Christian burial service; Muslims participating in ritual prayer; sacrifices of alcohol, milk and blood before an animist altar; a woman diving into the sea while going into a trance, recovered by four men and left on shore; a voodoo priest/ fetisher (a medium between the souls of the dead and the living) engaged in a healing ceremony, involving an animal sacrifice; a ritual dance, in which some participants lose consciousness.
