Eyam

1961 , Eyam (Derbyshire)

Account of the outbreak of bubonic plague in the village of Eyam during the 17th Century and the reaction of the local inhabitants to the disease.

Documentary. Based on William Woods’ book, 'The History of Eyam', the film relates events, described in Woods’ history, over a 15 month period from 1665 to 1666, in which the inhabitants of the village isolated themselves from the outside world, following an outbreak of bubonic plague. The commentary is provided by Ian Lauder. The commentary relates Woods’ description of the circumstances behind the outbreak of the bubonic plague in Eyam in September 1665, identifying its first victim, the tailor, George Vicars [Viccars]. There are shots of the cottage in which George Vicars was a lodger and a re-enactment of the delivery of sample cloths. A simple animation describes the spread of bubonic plague from Asia to Europe to London and a map is used to document the outbreaks in Ashbourne, Belpper, Darley, Chesterfield and Curbar. Shots of the Betty and Ian Lauder’s daughters follow as the story of Emmott Syddall and Roland Torre is narrated. Shots of the village of Eyam include: the church and churchyard; plague cottage; Bradshaw Hall; Mompesson’s Well; a sandstone boundary stone used during the plague to exchange money for food; gravestones located around the village.
