Period drama. An old man reflects on an incident in his youth that almost cost him his life.
Period drama. An old man takes a book from a shelf and narrates a tale from the seventeenth century by candlelight. A young man, on his way to London to make his fortune, meets and joins three other young men with similar intentions. The four companions pass the time on their journey by drinking and womanising. One of the young man’s companions approaches one young woman but she resists his advances. It turns out she is the local innkeeper’s daughter. At the inn, the young man, who is attracted to the innkeeper’s daughter, scuffles with the rejected suitor, after the latter manhandles the girl. During the scuffle one of the other guests is assaulted by the young man’s companion. This guest, an elderly man with a walking stick, is knocked to the floor with his own stick. A friend of the elderly guest returns to the inn and sees the young man with the walking stick, after he has wrestled it away from his companion. Hot headed, the young man refuses to apologise or make any reparation. The young man and the stranger arrange a duel. The stranger regrets the upcoming duel and reflects on what he might lose, when he returns home to his wife and young son. The next day the two men meet on a bridge for their duel. The stranger gains the upper-hand but does not kill the young man. The old man closes the book and reflects on all that he would have lost as a result of losing the duel, but ‘for the compassion of the stranger on the bridge’.
