Contrast Between Basildon New Town and Laindon

1959 , Essex (County)

Anglia Television report on contrasting infrastructure in and around the new town of Basildon.

Whilst the growth of Basildon new town continues apace with neatly paved footpaths and sealed roads, 'unmade' roads in the neighbouring village of Laindon are causing problems for local residents. Many of the roads become impassable after heavy rain, as thick mud and large puddles of water cover the unsealed surface. The roads are so poor that a taxi driver is forced to drop his fare, an elderly couple at the top of their 'unmade' road, forcing them to make the rest of their journey on foot along a narrow pavement.
