Cars old and new at the leading Frinton garage business.

At the Ratcliffe Garage an old car, 476 NO, is pushed from the main entrance onto the forecourt. A car, VW 6568, is winched onto Ratcliffe Bros flatbed truck, and then allowed to run backwards into a pit of brambles. This appears to be on farmland, with a water tower in the background. After another scene of the old car being inspected by visitors to the garage forecourt, there are more scenes of winching onto the lorry. The wide frontage of Ratcliffe Bros premises is shown. Cars are parked along the seafront where four horses pull a carriage full of a merry party, waving at people on the beach. Finally a brief shot of a man and woman walking past a building.

Background Information

The Ratcliffe Garage in Connaught Avenue, Frinton was run by brothers Claude, Telford and Cyril Ratcliffe who were early dealers in bicycles and then cars from 1906. The Garage offered parking space for visitors to the town with up to 50 garages at the rear of their premises backing onto Old Parsonage Way. When the brothers retired, Ted Hammond took over the business renamed Hammond’s Garage; after he died it was run by his wife Joan and son Richard. Joan was the niece of the three Ratcliffe brothers, and this is one of the family films. Joan was a film maker, and also donated films to EAFA on behalf of Clacton Cine Club.
