Great Northern Railway and Great North Road

1930s , Stevenage (Hertfordshire)

Transportation in Stevenage in the 1930s.

A long passenger train pulled by a steam locomotive races under a bridge, whilst another rushes past a signal box, and a third is shown speeding past in close-up. Other trains pass in the background as a steady stream of traffic moves in both directions along the Great North Road. Single and double-decker buses, cars of all shapes and sizes, and trucks of varying length whizz past cyclists, a horse-drawn cart and a pair of large steam-driven tractors. Finally, one of the buses - an NS-type double-decker - stops in front of the camera and a man alights. Walking with a cane, he greets a small dog and then his wife, who stands at her front gate waving at the camera.
