A Day in St. Albans

1963 , St Albans (Hertfordshire)

A boy and his dog wander the streets of St Albans.

A journey through the streets of St Albans on a bright spring day in 1963. A boy and his dog leave home and set out along suburban streets to Bernards Heath, where the dog is free to run around. They play in the woodland and open parkland, and the boy plays on the slide. Back out onto the residential streets, they walk beneath spring blossoms, continuing their journey down Sandridge Road to the flowerbeds at the top of St Peters Street and then past the Church of St Peter and the World War One Memorial. From there, the boy and his dog visit an exhibition of animals, look in shop windows and cross through St Albans city centre into the grounds of the Cathedral and down to The Lake. Passing the Roman ruins, they watch a crowd of model boat enthusiasts racing a variety of craft. Walking past the Church of St Michael, the pair head back towards the city centre and the 15th century Clock Tower. The dog waits patiently outside while the boy climbs to the top, taking in views of the whole city. Back at street level, the film concludes with a visit to the busy market, where street vendors and customers haggle over a wide variety of goods.
