Jubilee Celebrations at Elstree
1935 , Elstree (Hertfordshire)
Cat no. 2442
Dufaycolor film of celebrations for the Silver Jubilee of King George V.
Recorded on Dufaycolor on 6 May 1935, the film depicts the Hertfordshire village of Elstree celebrating the Silver Jubilee of King George V. After animated opening titles of two hares pulling along a tortoise, the film shows a Tudor building draped in red, white and blue, including Union Jack flags and 'God Save the King' banners. Nearby, a policeman directs decorated vehicles to the assembly area, as the crowds gather to watch a Jubilee parade through the village. Soon, the parade is underway, with a steady stream of fancy dress costumes, themed floats, clowns, decorated bicycles and cars, and local businesses and community organisations flowing down the street. Once the parade reaches its destination at the local playing fields, we see close-ups of parade participants, including children drinking milk, a 'prisoner' and 'policeman' eating ice-cream and a young boy dressed as Robin Hood. The film ends with a variety of children's sporting events, with boys completing an 'assault' course and girls competing in a sprint, before collecting their prizes and enjoying refreshments.
