Interview for the ICO project New Towns, Our Town: Stories on Screen

Interviewed for the ICO New Towns project, Sonia Jack says her family moved to Hemel Hempstead 1956/1957 from Southall, Middlesex. They moved to Polehanger Lane, Warners End where a few houses were of a Swedish design with the fireplace in the middle of the room between the dining area and the lounge. Sonia’s children were both born at St Paul’s Hospital which was being turned into an elderly persons’ hospital. Talking about the possible friction between local residents and incomers to the New Town, Sonia says in certain areas where there were mostly older people, or people who had always lived there, the locals might have been getting fed up because their children could not get housing. Her brother did manage to get a house when he was married. Her feeling now is that Hemel Hempstead has got rather large and the community spirit isn’t there quite so much. The Marlowes has changed, which she regrets. She enjoyed the market which was friendly, so ‘you felt you were in the country’.
