Game Fair at Burghley House

1963

Anglia Television report by Dick Joice on the 1963 Game Fair held at Burghley House in Cambridgeshire.

Dick Joice reports for Anglia Television from the 1963 Country Landowners Association Game Fair, held at Burghley House near Stamford, Lincolnshire. Opening his report in front of the grand 16th-century country house, Joice interviews the secretary of the Country Landowners Association who discusses the highlights of the Game Fair, including gun dog trials, fishing demonstrations and exhibitions of antique weapons and sporting dogs. The gun dog trials are shown, as are exhibitions of specially adapted hunting vehicles (from horse-drawn game carts to vintage hunt cars), and the presentation of long-service awards to over forty gamekeepers. Joice also meets recent Cambridge graduate Princess Elizabeth of Toro, who is at the fair representing her country of Uganda, recently granted independence from the United Kingdom. The Princess discusses her father's kingdom (a province in the north-west of the country) and her role in promoting the game life of Uganda. The Princess is also shown meeting Prince Henry and Princess Alice, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. Following the Duke and Duchess, who discuss the problem of rats with a CLA official, the report returns to the association secretary, who covers a number of other highlights of the fair, including falconry, archery, gun and fishing rod displays, and clay shooting - all of which are shown. The report concludes with Dick Joice signing off from the picturesque gardens of Burghley House.
